The recent updates from Windows (including kb2760583) have faired well on my XP and Vista machines, but my Win7 laptop is having trouble with this one.
For anyone else finding this problem (seems to be tied to Office 2007), please use the comments to help others work this out.
If I find a solution in the meantime, I will post it here.
